Description
The differential scanning calorimeter PT 1 is a well proofen DSC
system with a very interesting price. It is a highly precise instrument and the
principle of operation is based on heat flux between the sample and the
reference. The heat flux is measured while the temperature is changing. The
sensors that are used are highest precision PT100 sensors, which are able to
directly measure a changing resistance. The used PT100 has a very high
sensitivity and can be calibrated very accurate.
Many different applications are known with DSC
measurements. The following physical properties of
materials can be measured:
- enthalpy,
melting energy
- specific heat
- glass point
- crystalinity
- reaction enthalpy
- thermal stability
- oxidation stability
- aging
- purity
- phase transformation
- eutectics
- polymorphs
- product identification
Application example
Polyethylenenterephtalat (PET) Polyethylenenterephtalat (PET) shows at about 77°C a significant
endothermal glass point, which is quite special for parity cristalin
thermoplasts. The relation between the exothermal cold crystallizaiton (131°C)
and the endothermal melting peak is a measure for the degree of crystallization
of the material. In the case of PET the cristalin part is very small which
results in good transparency of the material. This is why many drinking bottles
are made out of PET.
Determination of the
"Oxidative Induction Time" (OIT) of Polyethylen (PE-LD)

Commentary: The polyethylen sample
will be heated under argon up to 250°C by a heating rate of 10K/min. After 3
minutes in the equilibrium the atmosphere of argon will be changed to oxygen.
After 30 sec. you can recognize a rapid oxidation of the sample.
